Perfect Weather Permeates
Pomerelle Pounder
After one soggy race after another, nice weather finally landed on a 2005 Wild Rockies event. The 7th annual Pomerelle Pounder returned to the high elevation (8,000-9,000 feet) Pomerelle ski resort in Southeastern Idaho near Burley. Although race day weather was nice, light showers the night before were helpful and the cross-country course was in perfect “tacky” shape on race day. Saturday’s turnout was light, (mostly because the event wasn’t even scheduled until a couple of weeks before it happened), but a number of riders made the trip and complimented the short, tight loop.
The event was round six of the 2005 MBT Wild Rockies Mountain Series, sponsored by Masai, The Boise weekly, Bandanna Running, SuperKart, Go-Ride.com, Trek, K2, and Hyde Park CycleWorks. The weekend offered something for everyone; there was a 5-mile trail run, a cross-country mountain bike race, ranging from a beginner distance of 10 miles, up to 25 miles for pros, and of course, Sunday’s gnarly downhill event.
The men’s trail run was dominated by two Boise High School cross country runners, Bryant Denson (who took third at the state meet last year) and his friend, Royce Hyland. With times in the mid 30’s on the hilly 5-mile loop, they didn’t just beat up on the other runners, they also ran the course faster than all of the beginner mountain bikers!
The men’s mountain bike field was hammered by over 40, amazing athlete Jon Gould, and the top female mountain biker was Boise’s Christi Hall. Paul Adams, once again beat all of the other sport riders proving once again that single sped bikes are more than competitive against their 21-speed cousins.
Sunday’s downhill was wild, with 66 eager riders, many of which were from Utah, eager to see who could rip down the Wiley Furhiman-designed course the fastest. The downhill as also part of the Utah Championship Series and carried a NORBA sanction. When the dust settled, Hailey, Idaho, Semi-Pro rider Moses Mexia and junior rider, Andrew Pierce, from Utah were the only two riders to crack the 2:45 mark.
